What is engineering, and what does an engineer do?
Professional engineers develop and apply new technologies. They convert basic science, by way of suitable mathematics and other technical analysis tools, into safe, working products. This requires careful reasoning, judgement, experience and imagination. Whether it is our transport system, our roads and bridges, our vehicles and trains, our electricity infrastructure, our buildings, our household items, our aircraft, our information systems, our communication systems, our health care technology, in fact practically everything that moves or doesn’t move, engineers have been responsible for their development and design. It is therefore easy to take for granted what engineers do. The success, or otherwise, of the engineers working in industry, consultancies and research laboratories makes the difference between an economy that is competitive on the world stage and one that is destined to be an also-ran. This is why there is such a range of engineering branches, of which Aerospace Engineer
