What is emotional intelligence and why is it important?
Emotional intelligence includes abilities such as being motivated, hanging in there in the face of frustration, controlling impulses, controlling your mood and having empathy and hope. Some of these abilities have already been talked about in other sections. (For further information see pages on Coping Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Social Skills, Optimism) Daniel Goleman uses research to show that merely being intelligent is a poor predictor of success in life. He states that many other factors also play an important role. One factor is the ability to know one’s abilities and get on with others.
