What is Emergent Curriculum?
Children and teachers both contribute with emergent curriculum. Children provide ideas that teachers use as a framework for preparing new curriculum activities that will encourage their interest and deepen their explorations. Emergent curriculum is meaningful to children as well as socially and intellectually engaging. This method requires genuine responsiveness and attention to children. Other types of approaches include predetermined themes or topics, Montessori (strong emphasis on individualized academic progress) or Reggio Emilia (actively engaging children in long-term projects in an art-rich environment).
