What is EMDR and how can it help me/my child?
EMDR is an approach to therapy that helps people process disturbing or distressing events in their lives so they can feel better and react more adaptively to current situations. It was originally developed for use with traumatic memories (i.e. car accidents, sexual/physical abuse) but has been expanded to help people with other issues, such as low self esteem and relationship problems. EMDR can help both children and adults. In practice with children, EMDR is modified to address the child’s unique developmental needs. For example, play based interventions are used in place of more cognitive based questioning. For more information on EMDR, visit www.emdr.com.
