Electrolytes are just sodium and potassium. They have a chemical reaction in your brain so when there’s a deficiency you would tend to be very forgetful, lethargic and moody. The sodium causes small electrical charge to be exchanged across a small synapse, and when it does it cause us to be able to remember and recall data. Without it, it just doesn’t happen and you just wouldn’t be able to do it. It’s kind of a little thing, but it adds up in the end. Remember the case of Terry Schiavo? She was in a nursing home, kept alive by machines for 15 years, and they wanted to turn them off and let her die. She was brain dead, couldn’t speak, couldn’t swallow, couldn’t eat or feed herself, couldn’t walk or stand upright. All because of a severe sodium imbalance brought on by purging with bulimia to get her weight down. I don’t know how much you would have to do that for it to be that severe, but it happened to her.
