Effacement is the thinning of the cervix. This may begin before the onset of labor. The cervix before effacement is 1 – 2 inches thick. When completely effaced, the cervix is the thickness of a sheet of paper! Doctors measure effacement as a percentage. Complete effacement is 100%.
