What is EAS and how does NOAA Weather Radio fit into the system?
The National Weather Service, through NOAA Weather Radio, is a key player in dissemination of local warnings via EAS. Radio stations, cable systems, and TV stations monitor their assigned LP1 and/or LP2 stations (as agreed in their state EAS plan). Some stations also monitor NOAA Weather Radio as an additional input. When an EAS message is broadcast over NOAA Weather Radio (you can tell it is an EAS message by the set of 3 digital “bursts” you hear at the beginning and end), it is picked up by those stations that are monitoring Weather Radio. If that station is also an LP1 or LP2, then the message is rebroadcast into the EAS network and picked up by more stations. And so on.
