What is earthquake retrofitting?
Earthquake retrofitting is the reinforcement of a house so that it is less likely to separate from its foundation during an earthquake. Different regions in the U.S. have different standards for earthquake retrofitting. Retrofitting solidifies the building so that it is extremely secure during an earthquake. Reinforcing the understructure of the building is one of the main elements in making sure that the building stays upright, minimizing necessary post-quake repairs. At-risk structures that have not been adequately stabilized with foundation bolting may not be able to withstand an earthquake. 95% of houses that are shaken from their foundations by the extreme force of an earthquake are damaged so badly that they are unrepairable and must be torn down entirely. Earthquake retrofitting makes sure that a building is securely connected to its foundation.
