E-Rater® is an automated essay scoring system developed by researchers at ETS. E-Rater® is trained on each essay topic through an analysis of hundreds of essays that expert faculty readers have scored according to GRE scoring standards. These e-rater® models are used to score essays submitted through the ScoreItNow! service. E-Rater® is trained to score essays that were written by individuals who took the essay writing task seriously and who made a good faith effort to address the specific topic presented. If your response is too brief to be considered an essay, or if it is just an attempt to fool e-rater®, you will receive an Advisory notice indicating that the essay is too brief. This is because essays from the operational test were used to construct the scoring models and very few long essays were availa
