What is Dynamic DNS?
There are companies on the Internet which can provide you with a DNS Address, even if your IP Address changes. For example www.dyndns.org or hn.org or www.no-ip.com. You should consult with them about how to use their service. But the basic idea is that you will receive an address something like myname.homeip.net which points to your IP address (something like 10.20.30.40). When your IP address changes, you need to tell dyndns.org what the new address is (or run a program which does it automatically). Then the address of your computer or server that you give to people is myname.homeip.net, which does not change. NOTE: These services are NOT provided by Haxial. Haxial does NOT provide tech support for services provided by other companies. If you need help with these services, you must ask the company that provides the service, NOT Haxial!
Whether you realize it or not, your computer might at this very moment be changing its Internet address. It’s true. Some computers have what are called changing IP addresses. This isn’t necessarily a problem, unless your website doesn’t change along with that IP address. In order to avoid this problem, you need Dynamic DNS. This stands for Dynamic Domain Name System, and it is the solution to a vexing problem that many people are not aware of. Using Dynamic DNS, you can maintain a website or a web server and not worry that others may suddenly be unable to access it. When you connect to the Internet, your Internet Service Provider assigns a temporary IP address that lasts until you disconnect. If, during your Internet session, you happen to update your website, the IP address of your website will change. The resulting situation is a problem for computers that aren’t equipped to track your website when its IP address changes. Since your website is probably some sort of http configuration
Dynamic DNS is a technology that allows you to update the IP address of a domain in real time. In order to fully understand how Dynamic DNS works, it is important to first understand domain names and name servers. Essentially, all website domain names are held on computer servers known as name servers. These servers are used, with the help of a Domain Name System (DNS) server, to change the domain name into something more easily recognizable by a computer, an Internet Protocol (IP) Address.
When computers communicate over the Internet, the send messages to each other in a manner much like the postal service and just like your local mail man, the computer needs to know which address to send your information to – this takes the form of an IP Address and will look something like 216.239.59.99. For most people, numbers like that mean very little and if you had to type the IP Address for every website you visit the web would be very difficult to use, not to mention the practical issues of having to remember every single IP Address you visit. To solve this problem the Domain Name System (DNS) was set up and is one of the main services that makes the Web possible. DNS is the process of transforming something that you understand www.google.com into something that the computer understands in this case the IP Address 216.239.59.99 used to access the search engine on the main Google page. DNS works like a large, distributed database and there are literally millions of DNS servers th
Dynamic DNS allows machines with IP addresses that change to have permanent addresses on the internet. You can buy a domain name anywhere, and then use ZoneEdit’s dynamic DNS solution to point that domain name to your machine. Before dynamic DNS you had to have a fixed IP to run a web server. Now you can run a web server with a cable modem, DSL line or even on a dial up. • How should I report errors in the BETA? Please send everything in the zedynip folder (the source code, log file and the txt file), to dynip@zoneedit.com with a clear description of the error, the platform you are on, the ISP you are using, and your zoneedit account id. • Where can I get PERL for Windows? Although you can get a version from Microsoft, don’t use it: it’s very buggy and crashes often. ActiveState makes the best version we know about. • How does the dynamic ip program work? The program: – detects an ip change on your computer – hits a web page http://dynamic.zoneedit.com/auth/dynamic.html?host=www.zone1.
