What is Drive by Wire? Why do I need to know about it?

In a Drive by Wire car, the gas pedal is physically isolated from the throttle. When you press the gas pedal, a sensor detects the pedal movement and the ECU handles changing the throttle position and other engine characteristics to deliver the requested power. In a non-Drive by Wire car, the throttle and pedal are physically linked and the pedal directly manipulates the throttle position. On some cars such as Audi, we need to know this to determine what type of gas pedal to ship you.
