By City law, Dogs and cats are held for 72 hours. But in order to give owners a chance to find lost pets, the Division of Animal Control will hold a stray animal three days not including the day it is picked up, Sundays, and holidays. After that, the animal is evaluated and if it’s adoptable, is put up for adoption at the Kennel or another shelter. Adoptable animals are held as long as possible, but those deemed not adoptable are humanely euthanized.
