What is Dolby Digital surround sound?
Dolby Digital is a series of audio compression technologies created and marketed by Dolby Laboratories. Dolby surround sound typically contains up to 6 discrete channels of sound, with 5 channels for normal-range speakers (Right front, Center, Left Front, Right Rear and Left Rear) and one channel for a subwoofer. These combinations of speakers are used to simulate the experience of being in the movie or show.
In thousands of cinemas and millions of homes worldwide, Dolby Digital is the reigning standard for surround sound technology in general and 5.1-channel surround sound in particular. It is a highly sophisticated and versatile audio encoding/decoding technology, which can transmit mono, stereo (two-channel), or up to 5.1-channel surround sound (discrete* multichannel audio). Dolby Digital, among its other attributes, delivers totally separate information to Left and Right Surround channels and is standard for high definition TV. Dolby Digital delivers CD-quality digital audio and provides five full-bandwidth channels for front left, front right, center, surround left and surround right speakers, plus an LFE (low frequency effect) subwoofer, for a total of 5.1 channels.
