Disability retirement is a benefit provided by the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland (SRPS) for eligible members who are deemed to be totally and permanently disabled and unable to perform their normal job duties. • Are there different types of disability retirement? There are two types of disability retirement, ordinary and accidental (special disability for members of the State Police Retirement System). • Ordinary Disability covers any permanently disabling physical or mental condition (includes occupational diseases). • Accidental Disability covers injuries that you sustain as the direct result of a specific accident(s) which occurs at a definite time and place (does not include occupational disease) while you are performing assigned duties.
