What is digital television (DTV)?
Digital television is a new transmission standard superior to analog. With a digital system, the pictures and sounds are represented using zeros and ones, just like the digital code your computer uses. While the signal can still be affected by the same interference as analog, it is easier for the system to correct the signal since it only has to replace a zero or a one. Therefore, digital television is sharper and clearer than analog. A digital transmission system can deliver both Standard Television (SDTV) signals and High definition (HDTV) signals. Antietam Digital Cable uses this standard. A digital signal also uses less bandwidth or space so we can add many more channels to the digital level than our analog service level.
Digital TV offers a better viewing experience with vastly improved picture and sound quality. DTV is also more efficient than analog TV technology, so broadcasters will be able to produce additional channels of programming using digital broadcasting technology. In San Diego, as of February 18th, all stations will be operating on their full power digital channels. This means viewers do not have to wait until June to start receiving the benefits of DTV. They can change today.
Digital Television is the umbrella term used to describe the digital transmission of television signals. DTV includes many formats of high-definition TV that can broadcast an image resolution of up to two million pixels. There are three sub-groups of digital TVs depending on their capabilities: high-definition (HDTV), enhanced-definition (EDTV), and standard-definition (SDTV).
Digital television (DTV) is a new type of broadcasting technology that is transforming television as we now know it. By transmitting the information used to make a TV picture and sound as “data bits” (like a computer), a digital broadcaster can carry more information than is currently possible with analog broadcast technology. The difference between analog and digital broadcasting is similar to that between compact discs and cassette tapes.
