What is digital publishing?
In its broadest definition, digital publishing is the production and distribution of digital content. This can involve everything from cell phone alerts and blogs to print-on-demand and eBooks. The forms of digital publishing can be grouped into two main categories — online and offline. Online forms require a continuous connection to a communication network, usually the Internet, to be accessed and displayed. The dominant online digital publishing medium today is the Web. Offline forms can be accessed and displayed without a continuous connection to a communication network. They are usually downloaded from a network or distributed on portable storage media, such as CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives and memory sticks. The dominant medium for offline forms that consist predominantly of textual content is Portable Document Format (PDF). In some publishing applications, digital content can be accessed and displayed online or offline.
