What is Digital Phone service?
Digital Phone Service, also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), is a technology which allows you to make phone calls over a Broadband Internet connection. Digital and Digital are also referred to as IP Telephony, Internet Telephony, or Broadband Phone. The general goal behind Voice over IP, or IP Telephony, is to carry voice (telephone) traffic over the same network that carries data (computer) traffic.
Lake Simcoe Telecom’s Digital Phone Service uses digital technology to allow people to make telephone calls via the internet. The technology converts the analog voice information from your phone into digital information which can then be transmitted via the Internet’s vast network. It travels directly to your destination, if they are also using digital phone technology, and their adapter converts it to analog information. If they use a traditional landline based phone company, the information is sent to a location close to your party and “switches” over to the local phone company’s lines. When the information reaches these lines, it is converted to analog for the rest of the transmission. The other phone receives the analog data and the party on the other end of the line can hear your voice. Their analog signal is converted similarly on its trip to you.
