A smart meter is approximately the same size as your existing meter, but it does not have dials, as a standard mechanical meter does. Smart meters have an LCD digital display showing how much energy you have used. There are differences in how and when the meters are read. Existing meters are read once a month, either manually by a meter reader or by using a vehicle that drives through the community to retrieve meter data remotely. Readings from smart meters will be transmitted daily to the company, using a two-way communications network.
