It’s a more therapeutic kind of nursing care. You spend a long time with people so you are really able to get to know them and their families and to actually see a progression that hopefully you have helped to create. You see these patients at their worst and then you most often are able to see them get better. You work closely with their families and learn all about the family dynamics. I’m much more drawn to the “caring” aspect of nursing than the technical aspect. I’m definitely not a “techie” – and probably wouldn’t enjoy a setting like the emergency room or the intensive care unit. The people I treated in rehab nursing were usually beyond their medical crisis. My job was to figure out how to give them the support – and that included working with their families – that would help make their lives better.
