A number of race cars have horizontal suspension setups where the front wheels pivot on long arms and above the arms are two horizontal coil over shock absorbers that are compressed when the wheels move upwards, this is to keep a low front profile and the setup is very hard with little movement to keep the ground effect working properly. Most normal, road vehicles have a front vertical McPherson strut suspension, where a long coil over sits directly above the wheel hub. Some use torsion bars which run horizontally across the car and are connected to the wheels by short arms that move vertically and act on the bars by “twisting” them. Older cars used long “cart” springs running fore and aft with the axle attached in the middle and softened by a shock absorber to stop excessive bounce. The cart spring type was also used crossway with the axle pivoting in the middle.
