What is Desiderata in Never Cry Wolf?
“Desiderata” means supplies. “Before I took off to begin the Lupine Project, I was given a lot of desiderata, most of which I thought was ridiculous. They gave me mounds of equipment that I did not even need at all. On the way to Churchill the pilot may have thought I was a spy of some sort. Also, there was so much excess equipment that I had to ditch most of it on my way to the Barren Lands from Churchill because the plane could not handle the weight of all of it. . . . Among some of the ridiculous equipment were weapons that include some shotguns, rifles, a revolver, tear-gas, smoke generators, and “wolf getters”. I was also given tents, stoves, sleeping bags, skis, axes, snowshoes, a dog harness, a radio transceiver and many other items that I cannot even begin to recall.
