What is currently being done with the knowledge collected on elephant vocalizations?
One of the biggest projects being undertaken right now is the creation of an online, elephant vocalization database. The Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology is currently working on making their extensive collection of animal sounds available to the public online. One of their sites will be an Elephant Site – where we will strive to house all that is known about elephant acoustic communication in the three elephant species (Asian, African savanna and African forest) so that it can be made available to the public for the purpose of education, conservation and scientific advancement. The Savanna Elephant Vocalization Project will, at least initially, be the main contributor to the site’s sub-section on Loxodonta africana, the African savanna elephant. Our recordings will also be held in perpetuity at the Macaulay Library, and from there be accessible globally in high resolutionversions. We also have our own comprehensive website (where you are now
