What is CS Tear Gas?
CS gas , 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, chemical formula C10H5ClN2, is commonly known as ‘tear gas’ because it is an irritant that causes the nasolacrimal (tear) duct in the eye to tear. Because of this effect it is used as an incapacitating agent in non-lethal self-defense sprays and by law enforcement as a riot control and ‘aerosol subject restraint’ (ARS) weapon. In 1928 it was discovered by scientists Corson and Stoughton and named after the first letters in their last names.
