What is “cross-banding” when dealing with wooden beams and joists?

I’m not a chippy but cross banding or bridging is used to keep the joists parallel top and bottom and is achieved by nailing timber in between the joists top and bottom in a cross shape and prevent them from moving, solid bridging can also be used here when a solid piece of timber the width that the 2 joists are apart is slipped between both to achieve the same result.
