WHAT IS “CONTINUING EDUCATION”?
Continuing Education, headquartered at the Miller Campus, focuses on programs designed to meet the needs of business, industry, agencies, and professionals in their fields. Programs range from on-going, career-oriented programs to customized training focused on development of a particular skill. Continuing Education focuses on on-site delivery of programs and courses. Continuing Education provides quality instruction in non-degree and non-diploma educational activities for area adults. Continuing Education courses do not earn aca-demic credit. These courses are designed to provide specific knowledge and/or up-grade skills. Programs of instruction are designed to lead some students to achieve basic skills proficiencies and enable them to obtain their high school diploma or high school equivalency (GED). A variety of courses are offered to meet vocational, avo-cational, cultural, intellectual, social, and recreational interests. Other programs are designed to provide occupational training for existing, new, and expanding industries and individuals at all levels of employment.
Continuing education is training taken by social workers that have already completed the formal education required to enter their field. Many professional associations, including NASW, encourage their members to keep up with the current knowledge base by participating in specified additional training within certain time limits. NASW recommends that members follow the continuing education recommendations in the NASW Standards for Continuing Professional Education. State-licensing boards for social workers may also require social workers to obtain a specific number of hours by successfully completing qualified academic or professional courses.
