With DRA K-3, a student is considered to be at an INDEPENDENT level when the student reads orally with a 94% accuracy rate on the Record of Oral Reading, has comprehension that is adequate or very good, AND at least a moderate rate of fluency. The comprehension score of 16 or greater represents a score that is adequate. These criteria are necessary to be considered INDEPENDENT. (TRG p. 41 Determining Proficiency.) For emergent readers (DRA Levels A, 1, 2) an independent reading level is reflected when the student is able to read orally at 90% accuracy. (TRG p. 36 Conducting the Assessment). With DRA 4-8, a student is considered at an INDEPENDENT level when a student reads at 97% accuracy on the oral reading portion and has a score of 17 or higher on the comprehension section of the continuum.
