What is Considered a Brain Injury?
TBI stands for Traumatic Brain Injury. In Iowa, TBI is known as Brain Injury or BI (formerly called head injury). BI can be caused by a variety of open or closed injuries to the brain; which are acquired after birth. Causes of BI include trauma from accidents, falls, assaults, and surgical procedures, anoxic injuries from a variety of sources, and toxic products taken into the body. What Educational Plan is Best? Continuous problem solving among educational, medical, and family members is necessary when teaching a student with a brain injury. Recovery from brain injury occurs rapidly for the first few months, then begins to slow. Therefore, frequent reviews of progress are critical. As the student changes motorically, behaviorally, and cognitively, modifications of interventions should occur. Changes in one domain may complicate or enhance progress in another area.
