Somatic embryogenesis is a recently developed technology for cloning plants using tissue culture. It is a technique that can produce an unlimited number of genetically identical plants from a single seed. The term “somatic” indicates that the plants have developed vegetatively. Vegetative reproduction is commonly found in nature, for example when a second tree regenerates from roots or from lower branches of an existing tree.
