What is confidentiality and why is it important in volunteering?
As part of being a registered volunteer, you will be required to take the Oath of Confidentiality. All information concerning a patient, resident or a family member must be respected as confidential and not be discussed outside the hospital. This means information should not be discussed or shared with anyone including family members. This includes seemingly innocent sharing – such as placing the patient’s name on a prayer list or talking to a friend about a resident’s condition. Disciplinary action or dismissal may result in a breach of confidentiality. Confidentiality is also important even after you are no longer a volunteer.
