WHAT IS CONEY ISLAND USA DOING?
Coney Island USA received a grant from the JM Kaplan Fund to hire an architectural historian and research old buildings in Coney Island. Based on that research we have already nominated 6 buildings within Coney island for landmark designation: The SHORE THEATER and the Surf Avenue CHILDS RESTAURANT (home to Sideshows by the Seashore) are likely to be designed landmarks within the next few years. The B & B CAROUSEL was saved by the Mayor and will return at the new Steeplechase Plaza. NATHANS is owned by the original Handwerker Family and leased to the Nathans Corporation which holds a 20 year lease. The family is sensitive to its own history and the building is not in danger in the next decade. HENDERSONs is owned by Thor and so is the GRASSHORN building. GRASSHORN on the corner of Jones Walk and Surf might be saved for historic restoration. HENDERSONs is likely to be demolished to make way for a water tower oppositie the subway station (Surf and Stillwell). We urge Joe Sitt to at least
