What is concentrated planting in a vegetable garden?
Concentrated plantings, or planting crops at closer spacing than recommended, will yield more vegetables. With plants spaced closer together, weed competition is reduced, as are soil moisture evaporation and soil temperature fluctuation. But, there is a fine line between planting vegetables closely and planting them too close! If crowded, the increased competition and shading lead to stunted growth and disease problems. Concentrated planting also makes mechanical cultivation difficult, and the gardener may have to rely more on hand weeding.
