What is Community Policing?

0

Community policing is, in essence, a collaboration between the police and the public that mutually identifies and works together to solve community concerns. With this partnership, all members of the community become allies and active participants in the effort to enhance the safety and the quality of life in and around our community and our neighborhoods. The Howell Police Department has embraced the operational philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. Foot patrols, bicycle patrols and initial programs to develop this philosophy and to foster community partnerships have already been put in place. The Howell Police Department is currently seeking to organize neighborhood and business associations to further expand the Community Oriented Policing concept. If you are interested or would like further information, please contact either Chief George Basar or Captain John Kowalski at (517) 546-1330.

Community Policing is a style of policing that centers around building police-community partnerships to work collectively in pro-active problem solving to address the causes of crime and other community issues. Some crimes and on-going neighborhood problems result from factors and variables that may be unique to a specific neighborhood. Often times these variables are known better by the people who live there than by the Police. By working directly with the citizens of that neighborhood, the police and the citizens share ownership in the decision making process, allowing us to prioritize problems, identify the root causes of these problems and effectively addressing these problems on not just a short-term solution, but as a long-term solution.

Officers are assigned to a specific community policing area in the Township. They become familiar with the residents and businesses in that area, building relationships and gaining knowledge of the area. When problems arise officers are empowered by the department to solve them proactively.
