What is Community Oriented Policing?
Community oriented policing has a wide variety of definitions but is generally considered a philosophy and management style that promotes proactive community partnerships to address the root causes of crime and fear affecting quality of life issues. In Mishawaka, officers are assigned to a specific neighborhood where they gather intimate knowledge about the culture, people and workings of that particular area. The people get to know the officer too. Through this partnership, they are able to address and tackle problems, sometimes even before they evolve into a criminal matter. These officers are part of our NEIGHBORHOOD ENFORCEMENT TEAM (NET).
This concept is being implemented over time in the police department and Salem community. It is an idea that has taken hold in communities throughout the nation as it seeks more community involvement in public safety concerns. The primary objective of Community Oriented Policing or C.O.P., is getting the police officer and neighborhood to work together and solve problems. We will be encouraging the community to get more involved and not expect the police to do it all. Cities and counties across the nation are turning to community policing. Community policing is a strategy that builds on fundamental policing practices with an emphasis on crime prevention and lasting solutions to problems. It requires new resolve from citizens and new thinking from police officers. Community policing reduces crime and fear while restoring a sense of order. But it also can rebuild the bond between citizens and government. Police officers, as public servants who interact with citizens on a daily basis, have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the importance of citizen involvement in the community. In turn, they realize that their authority and effectiveness are linked directly to the support they receive from citizens. When fully embraced, community policing is democracy at its best.
