What is Columbia doing to ensure that local and minority- and women-owned businesses obtain contracts?
The University is committed to ensuring that minority-, women-, and locally owned (MWL) businesses participate fully in Columbia’s contracting opportunities. During fiscal years 2002 to 2005, more than $112 million—about 36 percent—of Columbia’s major construction contracts went to MWL firms. Beginning in 2006, the University extended its MWL goals to include all construction, repair and maintenance spending. And during the past two fiscal years, Columbia contracted for $127 million with MWL firms, representing close to one-third of its total construction and repair and maintenance spend. In addition, Columbia joined with the Mayor’s Commission on Construction Opportunities to ensure that we are doing everything possible to support the growth of these businesses.
