A long, flexible, lighted tube with a camera on the end, called a colonoscope, is inserted into the rectum and guided into the colon. The entire length of the colon is examined during this procedure. If anything abnormal is seen, such as polyps or other tissue, all or part can be removed by passing instruments through the colonoscope. The tissue is then sent to a lab for testing.
