What is Colon Resection?
A colon resection is a surgical procedure carried out to remove a part or the whole of an infected colon. Colostomy is a part of this surgical process. Colon resection is recommended by doctors only when patient is suffering from below ailments over a prolonged period of time: • Colon cancer • Abscesses • Fistulas • Diverticulitis • Inflammatory bowel diseases • Crohn’s disease • Strictures • Ulcerative colitis • Familial polyposis (benign polyps) • Obstructed bowels • Volvulus • Bleeding arteriovenous malformations There are two procedures followed for colon resection: Open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. In both surgical procedures, the patient is first treated with general anesthesia before the surgery. Preoperative examination is first carried out where the pulmonary, cardiovascular and renal functions of the patient are checked for.
