What Is Colitis & What Are the Symptoms?
Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine. There are many causes for this painful disease, including: the formation of ulcers on the colon (ulcerative colitis); Crohn’s disease, a condition that affects not only the large but also the small intestine; and viral infections (see Resources). Treatment varies according to the underlying condition that has caused colitis. Symptoms range from mild to severe and may become chronic.
