What is coffee ?

Coffee is the “social” part of the choir. It alternates between going to a pub for a drink, and going to someone’s house for a drink. It’s a great way to socialise and get to know other members of the choir better! If you’d like to host coffee at your place, talk to the social secretary (coffee, tea, sugar, milk and cups are provided — all you need to do is make some water hot, and help wash up afterwards and return the coffee set to the social secretary).

Coffee is the seed from within the fruit of the coffee tree. Coffee trees grow in tropical climates and high elevations in numerous countries around the Equator. Red ripe coffee “cherries” are hand picked from coffee trees, then within 24 hours the two seeds within each cherry are removed from the fruit at a nearby coffee mill. Green coffee beans are then exported to coffee roasters throughout the world.

Coffee is the plant, the bean, the roasted blend and finally the beverage, which has conquered the world. The world of coffee begins with two plants, creating two different coffees, Arabica and Robusta which have very different qualities. Arabica contains 1.1%-1.7% caffeine and has a very pronounced aroma. It is mild, well rounded, slightly acidic and often features a hint of chocolate, producing a hazel-brown cream with pleasing touch of bitterness. Robusta contains 2%-4.5% caffeine. It is more astringent, not very aromatic and much more bitter. It is topped with a brownish-gray cream and is sold on the market at a much lower price than Arabica coffee.
