What is Coachella?
Coachella probably refers to the Coachella Music Festival that started in 1999. It is now a 3 day annual music and arts festival officially called the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival which is held at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. The festival typically includes alternative rock, hip hop, and electronic music that is being played continuously at different tents/stages all over the grounds. It also has large sculptures with often many interactive pieces which provide additional entertainment along with the music. Many of these sculpture/visual art/artists appear each year such as Cyclecide, Robochrist Industries and the Tesla Coil. Goldenvoice (a division of AEG) is the promoter of event. The festival typically gets very hot since Indio is in the desert and temperatures can easily rise over 100 degress. As soon as the sun sets though the temperature decreases rapidly. The event was started on October 9/10 in 1999 with acts like Beck, Rage Against the Machine, and Tool with about 25,000 people attending. They didn’t have a festival in 2000 but tried again in 2001. In 2003 the festival started to break out with acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beastie Boys. In 2004 the event solded out with 50,000 tickets sold for Saturday and Sunday. In 2007 the show was extended to 3 days and featured the acts of Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Björk.Below are some popular videos from recent festivals:
The name Coachella, although it is also the name of a city in Riverside County, California, usually refers to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The Coachella festival is held once a year in the city of Indio, also in Riverside County. Coachella is held during the last weekend of April. Since the first official Coachella festival in 1999, the event has grown in popularity to the point that the original two days designated for the festival have been extended to three days. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is held on the lawn of the Empire Polo Fields in Indio. At this location on 5 November 1993, the alternative rock bands Tool and Pearl Jam had performed for nearly 25,000 fans. The Empire Polo Fields proved to be an appropriate location for a large-scale concert, despite Indio’s harsh desert heat and distance from major cities in California, Arizona and Nevada. Finally, on 9 and 10 October 1999, the first official Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was held
It’s only the best music festival in America! Maybe even the world… It’s held every year in the late Spring in Indio, CA (near palm springs) and it’s usually 2 days long, but this year (2007) it’s gonna be 3 days! The dates are April 27, 28, 29, 2007. Most of the artists that perform there fall under the genre of alt/indie rock, underground hip-hop, or dance/electronica. There’s also lots of crazy weird art and a mini film festival. Tickets are kinda expensive, but trust me, its worth it! They have been very supportive but I don’t know how much kids watch TV nowadays… I believe the CNN of the moment is youtube. MTV is myspace and Big Brother is twitter… 3. Is there anyone at Coachella you’re looking forward to seeing? Yes!! Zizek – love them…also Buraka Som Sistema…and my favorite band on earth…My Bloody Valentine. I can’t stop listening to the new Horrors album – so I guess I will see them too! 4. When people speak of your band in the same breath as Kinky and Nortec Collective is that unfair since each group is so different musically in approach? No, it’s all good – they are friends and I understand why people say that. But it is like saying that Bob Marley is the same as Peter Tosh. I guess from a tourist point of view, yes, it is the same. I guess we all have so
