What is CM/RRR?
When dealing with collectors we often advise consumers to send debt validation letters, or whatever to them ‘CM/RRR’, or certified mail, return receipt requested. Every now and then, somebody asks how or why ya do that. So I thought I’d begin this series of how-to pages with an explanation of CM/RRR. Certified mail is a service available from your local Post Office. It costs extra, but it provides some key adantages when dealing with collectors. The service is only available for First Class [regular letters] or Priority Mail, but that’s OK. First class is generally all we’re going to be concerned with, anyway. You’ll need a couple of forms, which are available free at your Post Office. The forms look like this: Using certified mail provides you a mailing receipt, a unique identification number for your letter [so you can track it’s progress or see if it’s been dellivered], and a record of delivery that the Post Office keeps for two years. It does not provide any insurance coverage, and
