What is CM/ECF?
Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) is the Federal Judiciary’s new electronic case filing system that allows trained and certified users to file new bankruptcy cases, adversary proceedings or documents right from their computer. The system uses standard computer hardware, an Internet connection and browser, plus software to format a document for electronic filing.
In January 1996, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts began development of the Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) system. CM/ECF is a comprehensive case management system that will allow courts to maintain electronic case files and offer electronic filing over the Internet. Courts can make all case information immediately available electronically through the Internet. Eventually, CM/ECF will replace the current case management systems used by the federal courts across the country.
Answer. CM/ECF (Case Management/Electronic Case Filing) replaces the court’s existing case management system with a new system based on current technology, new software, and increased functionality. This new system can maintain electronic case files and offers electronic filing of court documents over the Internet.
CM/ECF is the court’s new electronic case filing system. It streamlines the process of creating, filing, and noticing legal documents by permitting attorneys to file documents with the Court and deliver them directly from their computers using the Internet. CM/ECF is a user-friendly, Internet-based system. By using CM/ECF to file documents, entries are immediately placed on the docket sheet. You can view both docket entries, and the case file itself, from your own computer and, if needed, print copies of documents in a case file from your own office. CM/ECF has the potential to provide substantial savings to attorneys, their clients, and the Court while improving access to Court records.
