What is Closed Loop Fumigation (CLF)?
Closed Loop Fumigation or CLF is a closed cycle gas recirculation system that evolved in the late 1980s and 1990s from gas recirculation technology developed in the late 1970s and patented in the early 1980s as theJ-System by James Cook, Houston, TX. Closed Loop Fumigation (CLF) is a phosphine recirculation plumbing system incorporated into sealed storage units to provide rapid gas movement and recirculation to achieve uniform gas distribution throughout a storage unit to expedite high fumigation efficacy while reducing overall fumigation time by several days. A small centrifugal fan is used to provide a gas flow rate of between 1/100 and 1/1000 cfm/bu. Gas is typically drawn by suction from the headspace and pushed into the base aeration ducts or other perforated duct means of base entry to improve uniform gas distribution. Grain storage facilities must be well sealed for CLF (or any other method of fumigation) to work properly. I began developing CLF as an advancement of the J-System
