What is cloaking?
Cloaking is a means to hide the real host from other users, for resolvable hostnames it looks a like Gll-20409F99.arcor-ip.net, and IP’s will look like 9DD2051.356EF559.713C47B6.IP. You get a cloaked host by the usermode +x (this can be manually set, or automatically by the server). For more general information on cloaking, see the section on cloaking in the docs.
The definition of cloaking is “The process by which your site can display different pages under different circumstances. Primarily used to show optimised page to the search engines and a different page to humans.” Most search engines will penalise a site if they discover that it is using cloaking, as this technique could artificially increase the relevancy of the web sites and was abused in the past. It is now treated as spam by most search engines and especially Google. If you are found to use cloaking as a method of increasing your relevancy, the best that will happen is that you site will be dropped so low in the rankings as to make it pointless being there and the worst that can happen is that your site will be banned completely from that search engine. Some sites have decided to cheat the search engines and deliver optimized content to the search spuders yet deliver differenr content to regular users. This is usually done when the site wants to use frames, java, flash or some other such media that would be difficult for search engines to read. The page is said to be “Cloaked” whenever this optimized content is delivered to search engines.
