What is clipping and why is it bad ?

Clipping is just that. It is actually clipping or chopping off the top of your sound wave. It would be similar to someone taking a pair of scissors to the top part of a painting of a mountain and burning it. You know there is probably a peak in that missing part of the picture but you don’t know what it’s shape should be. Once you clip that signal you can never get that information back. Digital clipping can usually be heard as a harsh or annoying unwanted distortion. Usually clipping occurs when someone is trying to make a track louder without watching the track meters. Clipping is most often indicated by a red line in your track meter. Please Click Here for a short picture tutorial on clipping.
