What is “Classification”?
Classification is a definition of how the property is USED, determined by its ownership and use. Classifications such as residential, seasonal, commercial and agricultural describe the primary use of a property, and affect the amount of property tax paid. By state law, various classes of property are taxed at different rates. For example, two neighboring homes of equal value will be taxed at different rates if one is homestead and one is a non-homestead property. Class rates are created and defined by the Minnesota State Legislature. New homeowners should contact their assessor to apply for the preferential homestead classification rate.
Classification is simply a structure for competition. Not unlike wrestling, boxing and weightlifting, where athletes are categorized by weight classes, athletes with disabilities are grouped in classes defined by the degree of function presented by the disability. In further detail, Classification is the process, including assessment and observation by sport-specific medical and technical experts (called classifiers), of determining in which group an athlete will compete, based on the degree of disability in relationship to the sport activity. In determining the class, classifiers take into consideration an athlete’s disability along with the physical demands and consequent movements and skills required of their sport. Some sport classification rules also require classifiers to observe athletes in a competitive situation to determine their practical capabilities.
