What is civil and structural engineering?
Civil and structural engineers play key roles in the construction of the built environment. There are many crossovers between the work that civil and structural engineers do, and they work together on some projects, but they are quite different specialties. Civil engineers maintain our infrastructure and provide the facilities for everyday life: they keep society functioning. Civil engineers create structures to supply clean water, maintain transport networks, improve urban areas, develop sustainable energy and construct major buildings, among other things. Structural engineers design and supervise the construction of structures of all kinds: they shape the built environment. When designing a structure, structural engineers consider shape, strength and function. They calculate stresses and simulate possible conditions to make sure the foundations will be secure and the structure will remain safe. They continue testing during construction.
