What Is Citizen Science in the Schoolyard?
Citizen Science in the Schoolyard is a partnership between students and professional scientists to conduct large-scale research while promoting scientific inquiry, environmental awareness, and interdisciplinary learning. Guided by scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, students gather data for international research projects. They also design and develop their own research projects based on their observations as citizen scientists. Citizen Science projects are ideal activities for teachers who want to expose their students to the real work of scientists. Students collect meaningful data according to easy protocols and scientists use that data to understand how bird populations are changing. Students become concerned stewards of the environment, starting at their schools and at their homes. How Does It Work?
