What is Chronic Wasting Disease and does it only affect deer?
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer and elk. Currently there is no evidence that CWD poses a risk for humans or domestic animals. CWD belongs to a family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). Clinical signs in infected animals include weight loss, excessive drinking, staggering or poor posture, and loss of bodily functions. There is currently no known treatment or vaccine for CWD.
