Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a disorder that affects the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves). It’s characterized by slowly progressive weakness in the arms and legs. CIDP occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. This disorder may follow a viral infection. It can be recurrent. Signs and symptoms usually develop slowly over several weeks or longer. These may include: Weakness in the arms and legs Tingling and numbness in the arms and legs Occasionally, aching pain in the muscles Without treatment, CIDP usually doesn’t improve.
