What is chlorpheniramine, guaifenesin, hydrocodone, and pseudoephedrine?
Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps loosen mucus congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth. Hydrocodone is a narcotic cough suppressant similar to codeine. Hydrocodone affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose). The combination of chlorpheniramine, guaifenesin, hydrocodone, and pseudoephedrine is used to treat sinus congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, cough, and chest congestion caused by allergies, upper respiratory infections, or the common cold.
